Application Deadline

Today is the last day to apply for undergraduate engineering programs at the University of Waterloo if you wish to start university in Fall 2025. While you still have some time to complete your Admission Information Form (AIF), your Online Interview (OI), and provide supplementary documentation, you must complete your application on the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre website prior to the end of today.

Sometimes, applicants will ask what time applications close. The answer is simple. The application date must be January 15th. This allows for applications to be submitted after normal working hours. However, it is probably not in your best interest to wait until 11:59 pm to press submit. If anything goes wrong, you will not have time to resubmit.

I will leave you with some photographs that I took over the holiday break. I had a brief stay in Niagara Falls, New York where I was able to visit the Niagara Falls State Park and check out the fireworks display over Niagara Falls. Here are a few of the interesting photos that I took on the trip.

I grew up in the small town of Welland, Ontario in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula. In my youth, I enjoyed softball, golf, and the uniquely Canadian sport of 5-pin bowling. My high school years were productive. I excelled at my studies and had enough time to devote towards extra-curricular activities to earn a school letter. I was fascinated with computers having owned a Commodore 64 and having maintained a network of Unisys machines running a very early version of QNX at my local high school. I had part-time jobs teaching computer courses to both adults and children at local secondary schools. I worked hard in my final year of high school to excel at the now defunct Descartes math competition and earn a spot in Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Little did I know that I would stay at the university for three degrees and eventually a permanent faculty position. Now, as a former Director of Admissions for Waterloo Engineering, I hope to share my thoughts on the road towards a career engineering.

    Now that the application deadline is approaching, do you know if Software Engineering will be less competitive than past years? If so, roughly by how much do you expect it to drop by?

    1. There has been a significant drop in applications to both Software Engineering and Computer Engineering. The drop has been enough that I expect both programs to have slightly less competitive applicant pools during this admissions cycle. However, our admission targets have not yet been approved by the university. If the targets shrink, the change might not be very large.

      2. There has been a slight drop in applications to Management Engineering. I would not expect any significant change to the competitiveness of the applicant pool for the program. The programs with significant drops in domestic application numbers were Software, Nanotechnology, and Computer.
